ANDY'S WIRE CADDIS PUPA
by Tom Knoth
This fly is a moification of an Andy Burk fly and is an excellent imitation of the pupal form of several different Caddis found in California, including the Spoted Sedge (Hydropsyche), Green Rock Worm (Ryacophila), Saddle Case Maker (Glossosoma) and Grannom (Brachycentrus). The florescent green wire body is a good choice for the Stanislaus considering typically poor water visibility in the winter, plus the fact that many of the caddis present are green bodied. As much pressure as the Lower Stanislaus gets, it is always nice to have a fly in your arsenal that the other guys dont have, and this one is unique and relatively unknown.
The wire caddis pupa should be dead drifted near the bottom with an indicator or tight line presentation. A "Leisenring Lift" presentation is also effective with this fly during caddis hatches; the method is to allow the fly to raise to the surface at the end of the drift or in areas where fish are believed to be holding.
