BEAD-HEAD PRINCE
NYMPH
by Tom Knoth
In addition to being one of the most popular flies in the world, the BH Prince Nymph is one of the best patterns for fishing the Lower Stanislaus. This is a deadly attractor pattern, combining the three dimensional flash of a bead head with a peacock body and white biot wings. It also is believed to be imitative of a stonefly nymph and is thus always a good choice for fast water. The Prince can be tied with or without bead head. Most fish the bead head version in faster moving water, and the non-bead version in slower moving water or stillwaters.
In rivers/streams, dead drift the fly near the bottom with an indicator or tight line presentation. In lakes, the non beadhead version can be fished using intermeditate line and a count-down-and-retrieve presentation; experiment with different retrieves until you find one that works well: slow and steady, slow pulls with a pause between pulls, short pulls of moderate speed.
