ALF - Threadfin Shad Version
by Tom Knoth
The Alf was created by Bill and Kate Howe, "Alf" being short for "Anchovy Looking Fly". The Howes are known for flashy saltwater flies with heavy use of synthetic materials. The Alf fly presents a tall slim profile with a transclucent look, features that are typified by many baitfish in both salt and fresh water.
After success in saltwater with this fly, I came up with a simple
version to imitate threadfin shad in the delta, and it is now one of my favorite
striper flies. Threadfin shad are also an abundant food source in our local
lakes, including Don Pedro, Tulloch, and New Melones. In the winter, trout
and bass will frequently be found chasing and crashing schools of shad near
the surface. If you encounter that situation, try this version of the
Alf with any sinking line. Quick and erratic strips usually work best.
